Eating Disorder Awareness Week
Did you know that it is National Eating Disorder Awareness Week?
Did you know that nearly 1 in 10 Americans will experience an eating disorder in their lifetime? In recent years there has a been a troubling increase in eating disorders especially in children and gender non-conforming individuals. National eating disorder hotlines have saw a 70% increase in the volume of calls since the pandemic began. Also, the number of hospitalizations for eating disorders have doubled during the same time period.
As a company committed to helping girls feel more comfortable and confident, we felt it was important for us to share some resources to help you or your loved ones struggling with an eating disorder. Our diet culture is pervasive with the added layer of social media influencing kids starting at a young age. It is heartbreaking to hear a young child complain about their big belly or say that they are too fat. They also start comparing themselves to others (as many of us adults do) as early as elementary school. Our hope is that we can all work together to say "no" to diet culture and help kids grow up to know they are at any size. That's why we chose to feature this graphic by @totallytellingtales graphic with the "but your shape is your shape and you'vfe nothing to hide" line.
So where to start? The information below just scratches the surface but it is a good jumping off point.
